Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about our kosher integrity, winemaking techniques, and ways to get R. Degen wines to your door.

Kosher

What makes kosher wine kosher?

Kosher wine is made under specific standards of Jewish law, with careful oversight throughout the winemaking process. At R. Degen, our wines are produced under the oversight of winemaker and Rabbi Mendel Wenger, who maintains the kosher integrity of the wine while pursuing excellence of the highest quality in every bottle.

Who oversees Kosher certification for R. Degen?

R. Degen wines are produced under the strict kosher supervision of the Orthodox Union, ensuring that every step of the process meets the required standards. Certification details are provided on each bottle and product page so customers can easily confirm the wine’s kosher status.

What is non-mevushal wine?

Non-mevushal wine is kosher wine that has not been flash-heated or pasteurized. Accordingly, the only individuals who can make the wine are those who are observant Jews. This allows the wine to remain closer to its natural expression, preserving freshness, texture, aromatics, and a more traditional sense of place.

Mevushal wine, on the other hand, is pasteurized so that non-Jewish individuals can help make the wine. This makes production easier and less expensive, but can affect the flavor, texture, and quality of the final product. We do not make any Mevushal wine at R. Degen.

Does kosher winemaking affect the quality of the wine?

No. At R. Degen, kosher winemaking is never treated as a compromise. Our goal is to produce serious, terroir-driven wines using thoughtful vineyard sourcing, careful cellar practices, and a commitment to quality at every stage.

If anything, the transparent ingredient disclosure and non-mevushal production method of R. Degen wines demonstrates a heightened dedication to quality, even among non-kosher producers.

Winemaking

What does "made with organic grapes" mean?

We begin with exceptional fruit and allow the vineyard to guide the wine. Every decision, from sourcing to fermentation to aging, is made with restraint and intention. Our philosophy is simple: make elegant, honest wines that happen to be kosher, without shortcuts in quality.

Are R. Degen wines produced in small quantities?

Yes. R. Degen wines are produced in extremely limited quantities, allowing us to focus on quality, vineyard character, and careful attention throughout the winemaking process. Each release is intentionally small and crafted with a strong sense of place.

Are your wines aged in oak?

Yes, our wines are aged in 100% kosher French oak, with the duration of aging based on the variety, vintage, and desired expression of the wine. Oak is used thoughtfully, never to overpower the fruit, but to support texture, structure, and balance.

How do you approach winemaking without compromising quality?

We begin with exceptional fruit and allow the vineyard to guide the wine. Every decision, from sourcing to fermentation to aging, is made with restraint and intention. Our philosophy is simple: make elegant, honest wines that happen to be kosher, without shortcuts in quality.
